November 2023 CPE Newsletter

Nov 01, 2023

Hello and happy winter everyone.

Yes that’s right, I just used the W word! With the snow about to fly and the puddles about to freeze, please do your best to ensure your children are coming to school in warm jackets, mits and gloves, and snow pants (when appropriate). And speaking of winter, some students are starting to get the sniffles and flu season is about to descend. A reminder to parents to please keep your children home if they are sick. CPE continues to be a busy, busy place with lots of events to look forward to. Please have a look at the following newsletter to stay up-to-date on all the important dates coming up. As well, don’t forget our regularly updated website and Twitter feed.

We purchased about $2400 worth of books for classrooms, resource rooms, and the library with the proceeds. Reminder that ordered items take 7-10 business days to arrive at the school (hopefully the delivery drivers make it through the weather and avoid road closures). You will be contacted when they arrive. Happy reading!

She prepares a Grab n Go breakfast for students five days a week. “Grab n Go” means, students enter, as usual at 8:20 and there is a table with food set out so they can just grab it and go! This is made possible by funding from several grants, funding from the school district, and even private donations from community members and parents! Thank you Danielle!

Battle of the Books 2023-24

Nov 20th titles will be released

This is a voluntary reading program for students in grade 3-7. Students can let Mrs. Tompkins (Mrs. T.) know if they are interested in participating. All reading levels are welcome, (being read to, or with, is an option as are audio books).

Between November and March, each grade level will read the 10 titles on their list (see below). We will meet regularly to read, discuss the characters, plots, etc. In February we will start practicing to prepare to battle with Begbie View and Arrow Heights. The goal is to know the books better than the other teams. Each battle consists of 20 questions that all begin with “In which book..”

If you have questions – please see Mrs. Tompkins ttompkins@sd19.bc.ca

  • Participating students must make reading their battle books a priority (aside from
    classroom reading, of course!).
  • The goal is to read all 10 titles.
  • Please read the books in a timely manner so that others can read them too.
  • The public library has copies as well.
  • Audio books and shared reading with an adult are all acceptable.
  • We are hoping to take the winning teams to compete in Vernon after spring break.
  • Students in grades 3-7 are invited to participate.

Steps to Participate:

  1. Sign out a book from the correct grade level bin. (Max of 1 at a time.)
  2. Make that book your reading priority. It needs to come back in 2 weeks or so to allow for teammates to read the book as well.
  3. Fill out the Battle form to “register” that you read the book. You will be asked to create 5 Practice Questions for your book and provide the answers. We’ll use these to practice.
  4. Attend lunchtime grade gatherings where we will talk about the books and do some fun activities. Lunch sessions will begin in December.
  5. The Battle will likely take place in early March. (Before Spring Break)
