June Newsletter

Principal’s Message
We have had a busy and exciting May filled with engaging learning opportunities, field trips, Grade 7 golf, and swimming for Grades 2 and 5. Sports Day was a great success, and our students demonstrated  kindness, teamwork, and sportsmanship throughout the day. Thank you to all of our CPE families who volunteered their time, and to the PAC for providing snacks and Subway lunches for our hungry athletes!

The month wrapped up with our Grade 7 students attending Sunnybrae Camp. They had a great experience playing laser tag, kayaking, climbing and playing large group games, along with deepening their friendships and making connections with the BVE and AHE grade 7 students, before they all head off to high school together.

Our CPE PAC is also working hard to complete this year’s annual yearbook. A special thank you to Lindsey Randall for the many hours she has dedicated to putting it together, as well as to everyone who helped sponsor the yearbook. Thanks to their generosity, every student will receive a free copy!

As we head into June, we look forward to celebrating student learning, enjoying year-end activities, and making the most of our final weeks together. Thank you for your continued support in making CPE such a positive and caring school community.

Take care,
Tammy Tomm
Principal, CPE

CPE PAC Photo Fundraiser
On Thursday, June 4th the PAC has put on a Family Photo Fundraiser, to access the site and book a time click here.

Please contact Katie at katielangmuirphoto@gmail.com if you have any questions.

Bike Rodeo
CPE will host its annual Bike Rodeo for students in Grades K-3 on Friday, June 5.  The RCMP will be at the school to support students in learning bike safety and rules of the road.  Please have your child bring their bike, skateboard, scooter or rollerblades on Friday and please make sure they bring a helmet.
E-Bike Safety Reminder
We have noticed an increase in students using e-bikes to travel to and from school. While e-bikes can be a convenient way for some students to commute, they also come with important safety considerations. E-bikes are heavier and faster than regular bicycles, which can make them more difficult to control and stop quickly, especially around busy school areas and pedestrians.

The RCMP has been communicating with schools across the district regarding e-bike safety and the growing number of concerns about how e-bikes are being operated on roads, pathways, and near schools. Families are reminded that there are provincial age restrictions for many types of e-bikes, and riders are expected to wear properly fitted helmets and follow all traffic and road safety rules.

We ask parents and caregivers to carefully consider whether an e-bike is appropriate for their child’s age, experience, and ability. Please continue to have regular conversations with your child about safe riding habits, respectful behaviour around pedestrians, and riding at safe speeds near school property.

The RCMP will also be visiting our intermediate classrooms in the coming month to speak with students about bike and e-bike safety, helmet use, and responsible riding practices.

As we begin spring bike activities and field trips, we would also like to remind families that e-bikes are not permitted on school field trips or school biking activities. Students participating in these events must bring a regular non-motorized bicycle.

Our shared goal is to help ensure all students travel to and from school safely. Thank you for your support in keeping our school community safe.

Kindergarten Orientation
We are preparing to welcome next year’s Kindergarten students! Families will be attending a Kindergarten orientation session in June.

To support this, current Kindergarten students will be dismissed early at 11:30 a.m. on June 11 so that teachers can orient new students and their caregivers to the classroom.

Grade 7 Celebration
The Grade 7 Celebration will be held on June 18 at 6:30 p.m. in the CPE gym. Please save the date and join us as we celebrate our Grade 7 students, share special memories from their years at CPE, and wish them all the best as they prepare for their transition to high school.
Class Configurations
This time of year we begin to draft class lists for the upcoming school year. Although student placements cannot be finalized until the first week of the new school year, this process allows us to plan for the best possible placements for all of our students.

If you are planning to move, please let us know here at the school as soon as possible. Also, if you know of friends or family moving into our school catchment, please have them call the school to let us know. In our configuration, multi-aged or combined classes will exist. This practice is well supported by research, and it also accommodates the number of children in each grade. Following is a list of criteria we consider when making student placements:

  • the child’s physical and social maturity
  • the child’s intellectual development level and age
    gender balance in each class
  • the child’s interactions with other students
  • parent information, requests
  • student friendships
  • student support services and the composition of the class
  • the teaching style of the teacher and the learning style of the student

Although we do not consider requests for a specific teacher, parents are welcome to provide us with information relating to the above factors.  Parents/guardians requesting special consideration are to discuss their child’s educational circumstances with the Principal.

Special requests should be sent via email to Mrs. Tomm prior to June 15th.

As always, we may need to adjust classes through the first week of September when we determine how many students have arrived in Revelstoke or moved away during the summer break.  For this reason, we do not publish class lists prior to the first day of school. We will not accept special requests in August or September.  If you have further questions regarding this topic, please contact Mrs. Tomm at the school.
