May Newsletter

Principal’s Message
Spring has arrived and brought beautiful weather with it! At CPE, we have continued to work toward our school goals with a focus on literacy, numeracy, and developing strong school expectations through our RAISE focus. Students have also been learning through Secwepemc animal stories as we explore competencies such as creative and critical thinking, positive personal and cultural identity, communication, and social responsibility.

It was wonderful to see many of our CPE families attend the Student-Led Conferences.  These conferences provide valuable opportunities for students, caregivers, and teachers to reflect on learning progress so far this year, revisit goals from earlier in the year, and focus on learning for the final months of school.

May is a busy and exciting month at CPE! Students in Grades 2, 5, and 7 will be participating in district sports, and many students are busy training for Track and Field season and our CPE Sports Day on Thursday, May 21.

Our Gardening Club, organized by parent volunteer Ms. Wilkey and teacher Ms. Sheldon, have been hard at work creating a beautiful sensory garden space at the front of the school. We are excited to watch the space continue to grow and evolve over the coming month.

There is a lot happening during these final months of the school year, so please continue to check our school calendar, read the monthly newsletter, stay up to date with weekly emails, and check your child’s agenda regularly.

Thank you for your continued support of our school community.

E-Bike Safety Reminder
We have noticed an increase in students using e-bikes to travel to and from school. While e-bikes can be a convenient way for some students to commute, they also come with important safety considerations. E-bikes are heavier and faster than regular bicycles, which can make them more difficult to control and stop quickly, especially around busy school areas and pedestrians.

The RCMP has been communicating with schools across the district regarding e-bike safety and the growing number of concerns about how e-bikes are being operated on roads, pathways, and near schools. Families are reminded that there are provincial age restrictions for many types of e-bikes, and riders are expected to wear properly fitted helmets and follow all traffic and road safety rules.

We ask parents and caregivers to carefully consider whether an e-bike is appropriate for their child’s age, experience, and ability. Please continue to have regular conversations with your child about safe riding habits, respectful behaviour around pedestrians, and riding at safe speeds near school property.

The RCMP will also be visiting our intermediate classrooms in the coming month to speak with students about bike and e-bike safety, helmet use, and responsible riding practices.

As we begin spring bike activities and field trips, we would also like to remind families that e-bikes are not permitted on school field trips or school biking activities. Students participating in these events must bring a regular non-motorized bicycle.

Our shared goal is to help ensure all students travel to and from school safely. Thank you for your support in keeping our school community safe.

Numeracy at CPE
CPE Math Fair

CPE recently hosted its first annual Math Fair! This fun, hands-on event gave students and families the opportunity to explore engaging math puzzles and games together in a joyful, low-pressure environment. Designed to be accessible for all learners, the activities encouraged problem solving, creativity, critical thinking, and perseverance while helping build confidence and curiosity in mathematics. We were excited to welcome over 35 families to the after-school event, and all students also had the opportunity to participate in Math Fair activities during the school day.

Numeracy Problems

At CPE, we continue to look for ways to make numeracy visible and enjoyable throughout the school. Students can participate in our Numeracy Problem Board located at the front entrance of the school. The problem is updated regularly and encourages students to think mathematically, problem solve, and challenge themselves.

Library News
Oh, the places you can read!

The CPE library has a school wide reading challenge “Oh the places you can read…”. In this challenge students are encouraged to read books in unusual places, have their photo taken while reading and submit it to the school librarian to have it posted on our reading board in the school.

The class that submits the most photos of students reading in unusual places will win a library themed prize!

Sports at CPE
ShredCOED and ShredHERS

The Stoke Youth Network, and Wandering Wheels are once again running the ShredHERS and ShredCOED Mountain Bike Programs this spring.  An email was sent home to all grade 6 & 7 families with the link to sign up and permission forms will be sent home with your child if they are interested.

ShredHERS is for girls in grades 6 & 7 and  no experience is necessary. This is a fun way to ride with a supportive group of girls in an easy going environment. Levels of bikers are split up when necessary to ensure everyone is getting the appropriate level of challenge.

ShredCOED is for all students in grade 6 & 7. Again, no experience is necessary and levels will be split up so everyone is getting the appropriate level of challenge.

District Sponsored Swimming
Students in Grades 2 and 5 will be heading to the Revelstoke Aquatic Centre for swimming lessons on May 6, 13, and 20. Lessons will be 30 minutes in length, followed by an additional 30 minutes of free swim time.

Please send your child with a swim bag that includes a swimsuit, towel, and goggles (if needed).

District Sponsored Golf
Our Grade 7 students will be participating in two golf lessons at the Revelstoke Golf Club. The club offers an excellent junior program, and green fees are free for students under 18 when accompanied by an adult.

Mr. Mackenzie’s class will attend on May 5 and 12, and Ms. Findlay’s class will attend on May 19 and 26. Students will walk to the course and may bring their own golf clubs if they wish.

Sports Day
CPE’s Sports Day is planned for Thursday, May 21 and will run for the full day. Please have your child dress appropriately for the weather and bring a hat, sunscreen, and a water bottle.

A free Subway lunch, sponsored by the CPE PAC, will be provided. Order forms will be sent home in early May.

We will also need volunteers to help make the day a success. Opportunities include travelling with your child’s grade group, assisting at events, or helping with the PAC lunch. Volunteer forms were sent home and are due back by May 11.

Jump Rope For Heart
Our JUMP ROPE FOR HEART event will take place on Thursday, May 7th. The school will engage in fun stations outside led by Mr. Mackenzie’s grade 6/7 class. Thank you to students for JUMPING into the fun. The enthusiasm and the fundraising is much appreciated.  We would like to meet a fundraising goal of $2000 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation!
CPE PAC
If you are interested in joining the Parent Advisory Council (PAC), all parents and guardians of CPE students are welcome to get involved.

The PAC meets monthly on the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the CPE library, and babysitting is provided.

The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 12.

Kindergarten Orientation
We are preparing to welcome next year’s Kindergarten students! Families will be attending a Kindergarten orientation session in June.

To support this, current Kindergarten students will be dismissed early at 11:30 a.m. on June 11 so that teachers can orient new students and their caregivers to the classroom.

On June 11, current Kindergarten students will attend from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and will be home for the remainder of the day. Please make arrangements for your child.

Class Configurations
Classes for Next Year: This time of year schools begin to draft class lists for the upcoming school year. Although student placements cannot be finalized until the first week of the new school year, this process allows us to plan for the best possible placements for all of our students. If you are planning to move, please let us know here at the school as soon as possible. Also, if you know of friends or family moving into our school catchment, please have them call the school to let us know. In our configuration, multi-aged or combined classes will exist. This practice is well supported by research, and it also accommodates the number of children in each grade. Following is a list of criteria we consider when making student placements:

the child’s physical and social maturity

  • the child’s intellectual development level and age
  • gender balance in each class
  • the child’s interactions with other students
  • parent information, requests
  • student friendships
  • student support services and the composition of the class
  •  the teaching style of the teacher and the learning style of the student

Although we do not consider requests for a specific teacher, parents are welcome to provide us with information relating to the above factors. Parents/guardians requesting special consideration are to discuss their child’s educational circumstances with the principal. As always, we may need to adjust classes through the summer, and perhaps even into the first week of September when we determine how many students have arrived in Revelstoke, or moved away during the summer break. For this reason, we do not publish class lists. If you have further questions, please contact Tammy Tomm at the school.
